What Penny thinks...
This spacious gite is newly renovated yet manages to maintain the character and charm of a traditional French Farmhouse. La Breuille is set in 2.5 acres of land within a traditional French hamlet and is situated right in the heart of the unspoilt and gentle rolling hills of the Charente countryside, with beautiful woodland walks direct from the property.
Onsite childcare provides you the opportunity to have a little "me" time, this can be from a little as an hour to an evening or a whole day.
The style throughout this property is a perfect mix of old and new with modern amenities and traditionally renovated lime pointed stone walls and original exposed beams. The owners have chosen soft muted colours and the floors on the ground floor are either stone or tiled.
You enter the house and come straight into the kitchen area, where you will find everything you need for preparing all those wonderful ingredients bought at the local markets. There is a huge Charentaise fireplace complete with log burner in the living section of this open-plan kitchen, along with a comfy sofa and a large farmhouse dining table. The separate living room has large comfortable sofas and armchairs and is just perfect for a lazy afternoon either escaping the heat of the sun or lighting the log burner and snuggling up in front of a good DVD. The owners will provide hands on instruction and wood for using the log burners.
The first floor has three bedrooms off the large landing, two doubles (one en suite) and one twin/tripple, all large enough to host a cot. Just off the landing is a fantastic collection of toys for all ages from 3 months to grown ups, lots of drawing materials and plenty of good holiday reading with a book swap scheme.
Parent Point: There is a single step from kitchen and another into sitting room, doors can be shut or the additional babygate can be used to prevent tripping.
You will be spoilt for choice in the gardens at La Breuille! Within the large private enclosed garden that surrounds the gite, you will find a BBQ, garden table and chairs, children's play equipment, and a large well stocked herb garden that you are welcome to help yourself to. There is an abundance of space to run around here, but if you need more the rest of the grounds are accessed through the gate and up the private steps.
In the upper shared area you will find the enclosed swimming pool surrounded by sunloungers on a very child friendly deck; no slippery tiles here! Adjacent to the pool is a large sandpit, a hammock, football and basketball equipment, bikes and a whole host of other outdoor toys. The shared area is also home to a very friendly dog, cat, chickens and sheep in the summer months.
Parent Point. As the grounds are set at two distinct levels defined by a high wall there are stone steps down from the shared area. It is not possible to fence either the wall or the stairs at the top so a high level of adult supervision is advised in the shared area. However, there is a secure gate at the bottom to keep children safe once in the private garden.

For the children...
The onsite qualified CRB checked, Norland nursery nurse can provide fun and exciting childcare on site for up to three children at a time. Children of all ages and those with special needs are welcome. Activities will include art, craft, sand, water and messy play, music, singing and exploring nature. All activities are age appropriate and tailored to the needs of your children. The owners are completely flexible about the time you might need to yourself; you can take an hour or two by the pool, lunch out or even a whole day.
The lovely enclosed garden has plenty of space to play and run around, with lots of outdoor play equipment. The children can even help to feed the very friendly chickens and enjoy collecting the fresh eggs! There is also a selection of children's and adult bikes with some wonderful rides direct from the property
"Thank you for providing such great creature comforts for our. I was able to read an entire book in peace, and I was able to catch up on at least four good films. Our son had such a super time playing with the children and of course Boule( the dog). Being able to go out for dinner as a couple and knowing our son was in good hands was wonderful. We actually enjoyed a real holiday as opposed to our usual change of scene". The K Family Oct 07
Set in the beautiful Charentaise countryside and surrounded by farm and woodland there are plenty of lovely walks and cycle rides direct from La Breuille. 10 minutes away at Chasseneuil, a traditional market town, you will find all the local amenities such as supermarkets, banks, a pharmacy and some lovely cafés. For those who are in search of some great French food there are numerous restaurants in the area with the closest being only 10 minutes away, and for those who want to cook their own family meals there are several markets on various days in the surrounding towns.
La Rochefoucauld is a charming old town with some great shops and restaurants, one of which is at the foot of the gorgeous chateau overlooking the river. The chateau itself is a great day out for all the family with some fascinating history, entertaining exhibits and a whole room full of dressing up for everyone!
Apart from the many 'caves' offering tastings of the local Charentaise tipple Pineau, a trip to Cognac is also worth a visit, with its numerous world famous cognac houses and a beautiful town to wander around.
A great attraction for the whole family is Vallée des Singes (Monkey World) a fantastic park with over 300 monkeys living in the trees above you as you walk around. There is a petting zoo, an adventure play area and even a place to stop and have a meal or just a coffee whilst the children play.
You have the choice of costal beaches at Royan and La Rochelle (under 2 hrs away) or some great lake beaches (that are closer to the house) most of which offer water sports. There is canoeing at Mansle, Ruffec and Montbron.
Angouleme is just 20 minutes away and is a beautiful university city. Set at the top of a hill and surrounded by ancient ramparts, the city offers great shopping and has some of the best restaurants in the Charente, not to mention the numerous cafes which allow you time to just sit and watch the world go by. Angouleme is also host to an exciting weekend in September with a Vintage Street Rally around the ramparts.
