What we think

What Wendy thinks...

This beautiful old watermill was a great success last year!  It's recent renovation, location and boutiquey-touches make it a winner for mums and dads who are looking for that heady combination.

The heated, infinity pool might mean that you go no further, but you may wish to consider a short (35 minutes) drive to the sandy beaches of the Mediterranean coast, walking distance to a bar and resturants as well as uninterrupted countryside and the Vidourle River on the doorstep makes this a dreamy location.

What's more, the stunning city of Montpellier, just 25 minutes away, offers a more buzzy, cosmopolitan experience but on an entirely manageable scale.

It's just on the edge of the village, so walks to the bar and restaurants are easy and it's also only 5 minutes drive from a market town with all facilities. This makes it ideal for a family of varying ages who like outdoor activities.

Inside

This lovely ground floor gite has floor to ceiling arched windows, stone arches and beams and is wonderfully sunny. The kitchen boasts a microwave, dishwasher, fridge, oven and hob and is open onto the dining area which has a large dining table easily seating 8 as well as a second smaller dining table.

Stone arches separate the living room from the kitchen area. The living room has a double sofa-bed, English TV & DVD player and gives you a good view of the private enclosed garden and then over to the field with horses in the distance.

There are 2 double bedrooms and 1 room with a bunk bed and a single bed. This gite boasts a stunning, large new bathroom with an old roll-top bath, stone sink and open roman shower. A washing machine is hidden in the bathroom cupboard.

Outside

Aubriete has its own enclosed private garden area with terrace, BBQ and garden furniture. The Water Mill has 2 hectares of land along the length of the Vidourle river with no neighbours, yet is walkable to the village and a couple of restaurants, a bar and a boulangerie / general store.

The heated infinity pool is shared with the other gites and overlooks the river. It has stone entry steps, is fenced and has access to the games room, adventure playground (separately fenced) and mini-football. Bikes (kids and adults), fishing and kayaking are all available as are blow-up pool toys and sit on toys. Sit by the pool and take in the views to fields with horses, ruins over the river and the old stone bridge. This is an excellent area for walks from your doorstep if you can be tempted away from the pool side!

Parent Point: This property is situated next to a river - the play park area and the gites' individual gardens are completely enclosed and safe, but obviously parents will still need to use caution when out of these areas.

For the children...
There is a myriad of toys and equipment provided at the Water Mill. Here's a summary: pool table, mini football pitch, adventure playground (swings, slides, see-saw, castle tent on the top), darts, table-tennis and ride-on toys. There are several hectares of unfenced garden bordering the river and two person (very stable) kayaks are provided for use (at your own risk of course). There are also bikes and fishing (bring your own equipment), or why not simply enjoy paddling on the river beach with your children?

And Beyond

The Water Mill is situated on the edge of a small rural village with 2 restaurants, a bar, post office, and boulangerie / general store.

A 5 minute drive will take you to the market town of Sommieres that has lots of bars and restaurants - as well as a night market during July and August and a medieval fete in April - and an excellent market on Saturdays. Laurence Durrell once lived here (visit the museum) and Manon des Sources was partly filmed here. It's excellent for little boys and girls who like castles, knights and princesses! You will find some lovely little cobbled streets with boutiques and the best market in the area on a Saturday morning.

The Voie Verte runs from here (a converted railway track) - great for wobbly bike rides and roller skating. There are several riding stables within 15 minutes drive and lessons can be booked for you. Why not drive down to Stes Maries de la Mer and take a sunset ride on the beach...

You are only 30 mins from the Roman city of Nimes with it's Arena (bull fights and concerts - even Elton John, David Bowie, Dido & Pavarotti came here) and the Carre d'art and Maison Carre. There are Feria on bank holidays throughout the year here - running the bulls cowboy style through the streets.

30 minutes in the other direction will bring you to Montpellier - lots of rainy day things to do with the kids here - Aquarium, planetarium, indoor climbing courses, ice skating, cinemas in English - and you can take the park and explore the back street shops and the lovely architecture. You could even visit the Opera (based on the Opera of Paris) with a babysitter arranged back at the gite.

The British caretakers can also arrange private wine tasting tours for you with your own personal driver. Avignon, Uzes (& the Haribo sweet museum) and the Pont du Gard are just 1 hour's drive away.

La Grande Motte is the nearest beach only half an hour away.
