We think that this is an unmissable house! Built around 1901, on the site of the old keep, La Maison Jaune is the former home of the village notaire. Set slightly back from the road and within this bustling Bastide village, the house was completely renovated in 2006 to bring it in line with modern life whilst conserving the beautiful period elements that make this house so special. Every detail has been carefully thought through to make this house a glorious holiday home.
La Maison Jaune is a classical, spacious family house with accommodation over 3 floors. Its beautifully proportioned rooms, large windows, roomy corridors and a sweeping wooden staircase all give this house a typically grand French flavour. The bedrooms are on the first and second floors and enjoy the commanding views that come from the house's hilltop location on the edge of this (originally) English Bastide village. On the first floor there are 2 pretty double bedrooms (one is for use as a single) and a twin children's bedroom, a family bathroom (shower and bath) and a separate loo. The second floor has a cinema-style TV room and play area with jaw dropping views over the countryside and a small double room set under the eaves (the sloping ceiling does impinge on this room but does not detract from its charm) with its own private bathroom (bath with shower attachment, loo and basin).
Bedroom layout
1st floor: 2 double bedrooms (one designed for single occupancy- the house sleeps 7 in comfort), 1 twin for children and family bathroom & separate loo
2nd floor: 1 double with a private bathroom
Downstairs, there are separate dining room and sitting rooms which have been decorated beautifully and feature antique furniture, chandeliers and beautiful, original fireplaces. These rooms are very much of the period: tall, smart and with wonderful tall windows, but modestly sized none the less meaning that a full party of 5 adults and 2 children would not all fit in the sitting room at once. There are plenty of other areas to sit however (including the terrace with outside furniture, the dining room, a table for 4 in the kitchen and the TV area on the second floor). The kitchen has been fitted out to a very high standard with granite worktops, a dishwasher and all the mod cons that one would take for granted at home.
Parent point: Owing to the age and nature of this grand house, the staircase is very difficult to secure with normal stairgates. A `baby den` type enclosure is provided to stretch across the stairs but caution will be required with adventurous crawlers!
Housekeeping details
The utility room has a washing machine and drying machine and linen and towels are included in the price. You do however need to bring your own swimming towels. 2 hours of house-keeping per week is included in the price and extra hours may be booked locally if you wish to help you leave the house clean and tidy at the end of your stay.
The highlight of this house has got to be the wonderful, walled, alarmed - and heated - L-shaped swimming pool which enjoys fabulous southerly views over the countryside. The pool is ideal for a family splash-around (although there is no shallow end and as ever with pools, adult supervision is an absolute must) and, as the pool is heated, it is fantastic for even the tiniest of babies to get acquainted with the water. Down a few steps from the pool is a small but completely shaded area that would allow children to play away from the sun.
Overlooking the pool (5m x 12m) and within the walled enclosure there is a large, enclosed patio. This is a great setting for family meals or for dreamy afternoons by the pool!
At the front, the house is set back from the main road through the village and has an enclosed gravel garden, full of flowering shrubs. There is also a barbeque and eating area at the front which benefits from more shade than the southerly facing terrace at the rear.
There is also a secure garage for your use which will park one car.
Parent Point: This property is set back from the road but is located within a lively village rather than in the middle of nowhere. It offers great privacy but not complete isolation and there will at times be road noise from the road in front of the property, and you will be able to hear the church bells and also next door's cockerel. Please also note that walking on the traditional wooden floors upstairs will create more noise than a carpeted house.

The location, within a village but with fabulous views, is exceptional. The bastide of Villefranche de Lonchat was founded by Edward 1st of England around 1280 and remains a beautiful and historically significant village. The convenience of having a village on the doorstep means that a boulangerie and restaurant is only a short walk away. In the other direction, and only a short drive (or longish walk) away, there is a lake, with a swimming beach and plenty of places to explore.
With the world-famous St Emillion close by it would be remiss not to mention the wine. This area abounds with chateaux and vineyards and is a UNESCO World heritage Site. In short it is the perfect setting for aspiring wine buffs.
La Maison Jaune is about an hour and a half from the magnificent Atlantic coastline, including Arcachon and Cap Ferret and the Dune de Pyla, the highest sand dune in Europe. Why not plan an exciting day trip to the seaside, coupled with a lazy lunch or a picnic on the beach?
